Voice Disorders

Voice disorders can be caused by a physical abnormality in the voice such as nodules, polyps, granulomas, scars, muscle weakness or paralysis. They can also be caused by a misuse or overuse of muscles used for speaking leading to strain and fatigue of the voice.

We work with people of a all ages who are experiencing any of the following:

  • hoarseness

  • breathiness

  • difficulty projecting the voice

  • too low/too high pitch

  • voice loss

  • muscle tension and strain while talking

  • throat pain while talking

  • changes in voice following athletic performance

We also see people who are experiencing voice changes due to neurological diseases such as:

  • Parkinson's Disease

  • Spasmodic Dysphonia

  • Tremor

Voice therapy may look different from client to client depending on the nature of the voice concern. It can involve lifestyle changes, learning new ways to use the voice to increase vocal efficiency, improve vocal quality, and decrease pain/strain. Voice therapy may also include massage techniques, reflux management, manual therapy, and strengthening exercises.
